1
What is the difference between a Contra and a Payment voucher?

A Contra voucher records money moving between the company's own cash and bank accounts, such as a cash deposit. A Payment voucher records money leaving cash or bank to an outside party, such as rent or a supplier payment. I decide by asking whether both sides of the entry are our own cash or bank ledgers.

2
When would you use a Journal voucher?

For entries that do not involve cash or bank, such as depreciation, provisions at year end or moving an amount from one ledger to another to correct a mistake. If cash or bank is involved, I use Payment, Receipt or Contra instead.

3
Under which group would you create a ledger for a new supplier, and why?

Sundry Creditors, because the business owes money to the supplier for credit purchases. Putting the supplier under Sundry Debtors would show the balance as money receivable, which is the opposite of the truth.

How do you check that the day's entries are correct?

I go through the Day Book and confirm each voucher type, ledger and amount against the bills. Then I look at the Trial Balance to make sure balances look reasonable, for example that no expense ledger shows a credit balance without a reason.

5
What are cost centres used for?

They track income and expenses by department, branch or project. For example, if management wants travel cost by team, I allocate each travel payment to the right cost centre while entering the voucher, and then share the cost centre report.

6
What masters do you set up before recording stock purchases?

Units of measure, stock groups and stock items, and godowns if stock is kept in more than one place. Stock categories are optional. With these in place, purchase and sales vouchers update both the accounts and the stock quantities.

Practise out loud. Say each answer once as written, then again in your own words with your own number or story.

Have a number ready. "My Tally Prime score is at benchmark on a timed test" is a stronger answer than "I am good at it". Take the test and quote the result.
