Data entry: practice, test and prove it

Keystrokes-per-hour tests on codes, numbers and invoice fields, scored per record.

Data-entry screenings measure keystrokes per hour and whether each record is exactly right. Speed comes from reading codes in chunks and moving between fields with Enter, not from typing faster.

Benchmark: 8,000 KPH at 95% record accuracy is the common entry benchmark; numeric work often expects 10,000. Requirements vary by employer.

Common questions

What is a good KPH for data entry?

8,000 keystrokes per hour at 95 percent accuracy is the usual entry requirement. Experienced operators on numeric work reach 10,000 to 12,000.

How is accuracy scored?

Per record. One wrong character makes the whole record wrong, because that is how it works in a real database.

Can I use the number pad?

Yes, and you should for numeric formats. Ten-key entry is roughly twice as fast as the number row once practised.
