GST basics interview questions
Common GST questions for accounts and billing roles, with answers that show you understand the reasoning.
I compare the supplier's location with the place of supply. If both are in the same state, I charge CGST and SGST split equally; if they are in different states, I charge IGST. For example, a Chennai supplier delivering to Bengaluru would charge IGST.
Input tax credit is the GST paid on business purchases that can be set off against GST collected on sales. Assume we collected 40,000 GST on sales and paid 25,000 on eligible purchases; we would pay 15,000 in cash after using the credit.
No. CGST and SGST credits cannot be used against each other. CGST credit can be used for CGST and IGST, and SGST credit for SGST and IGST, while IGST credit is used first for IGST and then for CGST and SGST.
I check the supplier's GSTIN, our GSTIN, the invoice number and date, HSN or SAC code, taxable value and tax amounts, and whether the tax type matches the place of supply. If any detail is wrong, the credit may be denied, so I ask the supplier to correct it first.
Under reverse charge, the recipient pays the tax to the government instead of the supplier, for supplies notified under the law. The recipient records the liability and can generally claim it as credit if the purchase is for business.
I do not rely on memory because rates, limits and dates change through notifications. I check the latest official notification or the GST portal before applying it, and I note the source in the working file.
Practise out loud. Say each answer once as written, then again in your own words with your own number or story.
Have a number ready. "My GST basics score is at benchmark on a timed test" is a stronger answer than "I am good at it". Take the test and quote the result.
