What this test measures

This is a straightforward 60-second typing speed test. It measures three things: how many words you can type per minute (WPM), what percentage of your keystrokes are correct (accuracy), and how many errors you make along the way.

  • WPM (words per minute): total correctly typed characters divided by 5 (the standard word length), divided by time in minutes. This is the most widely used typing speed metric.
  • Accuracy %: percentage of characters typed correctly. Most employers screening for typing roles look for 90% or higher accuracy alongside a minimum WPM.
  • Error count: total characters typed incorrectly. Fewer errors at a slower speed is generally valued more than high speed with many errors in professional contexts.

How typing speed relates to common job roles

Different types of roles commonly expect different typing speeds during their screening process. These are illustrative benchmarks based on publicly available data; actual employer requirements vary.

Role type Typical WPM Accuracy
Data entry operator 35–45 WPM 95%+
BPO typing executive 35 WPM 90%+
Content writer / editor 50–65 WPM 96%+
SSC CHSL (English) 35 WPM Qualifying
Administrative assistant 40–55 WPM 93%+
Transcriptionist 60–80 WPM 98%+

Benchmarks are illustrative. Always verify specific requirements with the employer or exam authority.

Tips to improve your typing speed

  • Focus on accuracy first: speed built on top of inaccuracy just reinforces bad habits. Get to 95%+ accuracy at any speed, then gradually push faster.
  • Practise 20 minutes daily: short, focused daily sessions build muscle memory faster than occasional long sessions. Consistency matters more than duration.
  • Use all 10 fingers: touch typing with proper finger placement is the single biggest speed multiplier. Two-finger typing has a hard ceiling around 30–40 WPM.
  • Try different practice modes: alternate between timed tests, paragraph practice and sustained 10-minute sessions. Each builds a different aspect of typing skill.
