Verbal ability sections check how well you understand and use written English. Typical questions ask for the meaning of a word in a sentence, the best correction of a faulty sentence, the right word for a blank, the logical order of four sentences, or answers based on a short passage. The sentence or passage usually contains the clue you need.

This set includes each of these types, with short workplace passages for reading practice. The lessons explain how to use signal words, spot common sentence errors and order sentences using pronouns and connectors.

Benchmark: The pass mark on this site is 80%; verbal ability is commonly screened for fresher, IT trainee, bank, content and support roles. Requirements vary by employer.

Common questions

How is verbal ability different from a grammar test?

A grammar test focuses on rules such as tense and agreement. Verbal ability also covers vocabulary, reading comprehension and the logic of how sentences fit together.

How can I improve my vocabulary quickly for a test?

Learn words in full sentences and practise using context clues, because screenings test words in sentences. Memorising long word lists without context helps less.

What if I do not know any of the words in the options?

Use the sentence to decide whether the missing word should be positive or negative, then remove options that do not fit. You can often reach the answer this way.
