Remote and work-from-home jobs: the four skills that matter

Which skills open genuine, paid remote roles, and how to practise each one.

EWritten by the HomebaseWorks editorial team

Work-from-home roles in India that are legitimate and paid typically require specific, verifiable skills. Knowing which skills matter, and practising them before you apply, significantly improves your chances of passing the screening process.

Important: any "WFH job" that asks you to pay a registration or training fee upfront is not legitimate. The four skills below open access to genuine, paid remote roles, and none of them require payment to enter.

The four skills that matter

  1. Typing speed (30+ WPM). Required for virtually every WFH data entry, BPO and admin role. Without at least 30 WPM with 90%+ accuracy, most legitimate WFH data jobs are not accessible. Start typing practice.
  2. Data accuracy. Entering information correctly under time pressure. A candidate with 28 WPM and 99% accuracy is often preferred over 45 WPM with 85% accuracy in data roles. Start data entry practice.
  3. Basic proofreading. Content QA and moderation roles commonly screen for error-spotting ability. Two weeks of daily practice shows clear improvement in most people. Start proofreading practice.
  4. Professional email writing. Entry-level customer support and virtual assistant roles screen written English quality. Clear, professional email writing without errors is a common filter. Start email writing practice.
